In this entry I’ll be writing about my experiences thus far as a fresh new young teen trying to
make some bucks with graphic designing.
It’s been about 2 weeks now that I’ve been doing requests, and I’m extremely delighted with the outcome.
I’d also like to give new graphics enthusiast’s a tip – don’t wait for people to find you, you find them.
I’ll split the post up into different sections so that it isn’t psychologically taxing on the eyes.
1. So far, I’ve advertised services on mainly forum boards. It’s a VERY, and i mean VERY good way to promote and advertise your graphic services to the active web community. Be sure to pick an active forum board, one where there are heaps of people searching for graphics.
2. If you’re good enough, join graphic contests to get your name out, and even if you don’t win, people are watching your designs for sure. I’ve won 2 in 2 weeks, and seeing that I’m not a graphic designer with a BA(hons) or any of those stuff, I’m pretty contented. What’s good about contests is that you’re more likely to make more money (if you win) than if you just do requests for others. Be warned that continuous revisions would be asked from the contest holder, you should be prepared to do them. Don’t expect yourself to win almost all the contests you enter, i reckon I entered about 10 and only won 2. There’s pretty brilliant graphic designers out there, if you’re like me(self taught), it’s really good to learn from the pros.
Observe their design concepts, but never directly copy of course.
2. Always check the “wanted” section of SEO marketing forums, there’s bound to be some webmaster hunting for a logo/graphic designer. PM them and provide examples of your works.
3. If there are webmasters etc in need of even 1 banner design, try to take the job. It is likely that they would come back and request more if your first design meets their expectations. I had a few requesting 7 graphics at a go. So make sure your first custom design for them is top notch.
I’m still new at this whole thing, this post just indicates what i’ve done and found out thusfar. I don’t have entrecard yet, I have not listed this blog on any directories whatsoever to promote it. All I have done is enter comps on forums, and offer my services at forum boards and I’ve made a fair bit of money.
